Snippets and Writing

Sitting at home today (my roommates were out for the day) I found myself deep into my music collection.  Not as deep as I could go but back to some of the music I listened to in High School.  As it is today, there was a lot of variation to what I listened to back then.  I was just then learning what I liked.  As I said, this is some of the music I listened to IN high school, but it doesn’t all come from the time I was in high school.  I thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon, writing and listening.  I hope you do the same.

“She gets the sun in the daytime
Perfume in the dusk
And she comes out in the night time
With the honeysuckle musk
Because she smells just like a rose
And she tastes just like a peach
She got me walking where the wildlife goes
I’d do anything to reach her”
— Dire Straits “Expresso Love”

“And on the cool check in
Center stage on the mic
And we’re puttin’ it on wax
It’s the new style

Four and three and two and one What up!
And when I’m on the mic – the suckers run (Word!)
Down with Adrock and Mike D. and you ain’t
And I got more juice than Picasso got paint
Got rhymes that are rough and rhymes that are slick
I’m not surprised you’re on my dick
B-E-A-S-T-I-E, what up Mike D.
Ah yeah, that’s me
I got franks and pork and beans
Always bust the new routines
I get it – I got it, I know it’s good
The rhymes I write – you wish you would
I’m never in training – my voice is not straining
People always biting and I’m sick of complaining
So I went into the locker room during classes
Bust into your locker and I smashed your glasses
You’re from Secausus – I’m from Manhattan
You’re jealous of me because your girlfriend is cattin’ “
— Beastie Boys “The New Style”

“Everyday I think of you,
You’re on my mind.
Some things in the past
Are better left behind.
Every night I dream of you,
The images as clear as day.”
— Boston “Can’tcha Say (You Believe in Me)”

“Spent my days with a woman unkind,
Smoked my stuff and drank all my wine.
Made up my mind to make a new start,
Going To California with an aching in my heart.
Someone told me there’s a girl out there
With love in her eyes and flowers in her hair.
Took my chances on a big jet plane,
Never let them tell you that they’re all the same.
The sea was red and the sky was grey,
Wondered how tomorrow could ever follow today.
The mountains and the canyons started to tremble and shake
as the children of the sun began to awake.”
— Led Zeppelin “Going to California”

“Build my fear of what’s out there
And cannot breathe the open air
Whisper things into my brain
Assuring me that I’m insane
They think our heads are in their hands
But violent use brings violent plans
Keep him tied, it makes him well
He’s getting better, can’t you tell?”
— Metallica “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)”

“That’s alright, that’s okay
We were walkin’ through some youth
Smilin’ through some pain
That’s alright, that’s okay
Let’s turn the page”
— Motley Crue “Don’t Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)”

“Old dusty roads, led to the river
Runnin’ slow
She pulled me down, and in clover
We’d go ’round
In the heat with a blue jean girl
Burnin’ love comes once in a lifetime
Oo the memories never fade away
Golden girl, I’ll keep you forever.”
— Journey “Stone in Love”

“Dig if u will the picture
Of u and I engaged in a kiss
The sweat of your body covers me
Can u my darling
Can u picture this?”
— Prince “When Doves Cry”

“Too much time on my hands, it’s ticking away at my sanity
I’ve got too much time on my hands, it’s hard to believe such a calamity
I’ve got too much time on my hands and it’s ticking away from me”
— Styx “Too Much Time on My Hands”

“She runs through the streets
With her eyes painted red
Under black belly of cloud in the rain
In through a doorway she brings me
White gold and pearls stolen from the sea
She is raging
She is raging
And the storm blows up in her eyes
She will…

Suffer the needle chill
She’s running to stand…

Still.”
— U2 “Running to Stand Still”
