These Words

These words say everything
Boiled down to its essence
These words say nothing
Scummy leavings in the bottom of a pan
These words are outrageous
Read through the filter of the Bazaar
These words are joyous
Carried by the voices of the Sunday choir
These words float on the breeze
Sweet scents on butterfly wings
These words hold your hand
Warm solace in the deep deep night
These words are ephemeral
Catch them quick before they’re gone
These words are matter of fact
Listen if you want to hear the truth
These words cost me everything
You may have them for a song

3/4 Time

We live a life filled with music
I hear you softly humming
In the wind through the trees
With my eyes closed,
In a silent room
Your voice creeps into my head
Making itself comfortable
More than a long found friend
Soon we are singing the familiar chords
That brought us together
Then, and now
The notes lilt and sway
Catch up then lay back
Waiting for that moment
To let the full orchestra in
As it speaks our tale
Forever captured in 3/4 time

Nothing More

Spending a late Saturday night (after a bunch of football) binge-watching some old episodes of NCIS I hear this song and start to wonder about it. The lyrics are simple but they carry great meaning, to me any way. So I won’t prattle on about why, I’ll just let everyone out there read for themselves. This is Nothing More by The Alternate Routes:

To be humble, to be kind.
It is the giving of the peace in your mind
To a stranger, To a friend
To give in such a way that has no end

We are Love
We are One
We are how we treat each other when the day is done
We are Peace
We are War
We are how we treat each other and Nothing More

To be bold, to be brave.
It is the thinking that the heart can still be saved
And the darkness can come quick
The Dangers in the Anger and the hanging on to it

We are Love
We are One
We are how we treat each other when the day is done
We are Peace
We are War
We are how we treat each other and Nothing More

Tell me what it is that you see
A world that’s filled with endless possibilities?
Heroes don’t look like they used to, they look like you do

We are Love
We are One
We are how we treat each other when the day is done.
We are Peace
We are War
We are how we treat each other and Nothing More

The Times You’ve Come

While I sit here trying to get this damned virtual machine up and running, I put my media player on shuffle and this song came up 3 times in 2 hours (so much for shuffle). I do have to say that I really didn’t mind. It’s a Jackson Browne song that still holds some very good memories even after a long, long time. It reminds me of a certain someone that occupies a very special place in my heart. Here’s to you… you know who you are.

“The Times You’ve Come”
by Jackson Browne

In the time we’ve known
That we each are a part of one another
We’ve lost as much as we have won
And as our lives have grown
We have found that it only brings us pain
That hangs on to the things that we have done
Still I’ve loved the times you’ve come

When you went away
Taking all that I’d built my false road on
I dropped my life and couldn’t find the pieces
Now you come and go
And it’s hard but I feel my strength returning
We’ll see how far this new road reaches
We’ll see a little more each time we come

Now everybody’s gonna tell you it’s not worth it
Everybody’s gotta show you their own thing
You might try to find your way up around it
But the need for love will still remain

Now we’re lying here
So safe in the ruins of our pleasures
Laughter marks the place where we have fallen
And our lives are near
So it wouldn’t occur to us to wonder
Is this the past or the future that is calling

You know I’ve loved these times you’ve come.

Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters

This tune stayed with me after watching “Almost Famous” for the billionth time. I always find it interesting which songs get caught in my conscience and which ones slide right off. With this movie it is usually a different Elton John song (“Tiny Dancer”) but not this time. Maybe it’s because I have heard it quite a lot over the past few months. Another song from the movie caught my attention too, but it’s so quiet and appears so quickly I need to do some research to see if I can figure it out. Until then, here’s:

“Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters”
by Elton John

And now I know
Spanish Harlem are not just pretty words to say
I thought I knew
But now I know that rose trees never grow in New York City

Until you’ve seen this trash can dream come true
You stand at the edge while people run you through
And I thank the Lord there’s people out there like you
I thank the Lord there’s people out there like you

While Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters
Sons of bankers, sons of lawyers
Turn around and say good morning to the night
For unless they see the sky
But they can’t and that is why
They know not if it’s dark outside or light

This Broadway’s got
It’s got a lot of songs to sing
If I knew the tunes I might join in
I’ll go my way alone
Grow my own, my own seeds shall be sown in New York City

Subway’s no way for a good man to go down
Rich man can ride and the hobo he can drown
And I thank the Lord for the people I have found
I thank the Lord for the people I have found

By the way, I did find that song. It’s “River” by Joni Mitchell and I wrote about it previously https://gavin8r.wordpress.com/2014/02/13/two-songs-today-pt-2-021314/

Inside Out

I heard this song when I first woke this morning. Though I’m not sure how, exactly, that was possible, since the house was completely silent when I put my feet on the floor. Maybe that was what allowed the song to seep into my awareness. Later in the day, I found the song on my computer and listened to it a few times, to sorta get my fill. Now that I’m writing about it I am listening to it again and it still holds the attraction I had for it the first time I ever heard it… and when it ran through my mind this morning. This is “Inside Out” by Sara Bareilles:

I’ve been winding
Down the same road for days
I’ve seen the coastline
Going both ways
Some days are perfect
And some simply could not get worse
Some days it’s all worth it
And some days this life is nothing but a curse

And I wonder who will break first

I am small
I feel like no more than nothing at all
But when I lose sight of daylight
And my darkness falls
I’ll be strong
And if not now it won’t be long
From when I lose sight of daylight
And my hands are weak
And my soul is tired
Oh, I’ll give my love from the inside out
From the inside out

Little spirit
Now don’t you desert me now
I know I don’t always hear it
You don’t always speak so loud
And I’m not willing
To simply lay down my soul for this
It may be all that I’m giving
But take my love for what it is

I am small
I feel like no more than nothing at all
But when I lose sight of daylight
And my darkness falls
I’ll be strong
And if not now it won’t be long
From when I lose sight of daylight
And my hands are weak and my soul is tired
Oh, I’ll give my love from the inside out

Take your best shot
Here I stand, heart in hand
And fearless I’m not
But I am what I am
And I know what I’m not
And I know enough to know it’s never
Gonna be much more than weather
You can’t drive me away
When it’s only rain
On the inside
It’s only rain
From the inside
It’s only rain
From the inside
It’s only rain
From the inside
From the inside out
I am small
From the inside out
I am small

Thinking of you

I heard this song tonight and I really listened to it, then I looked up the words and I listened to it again, then again and when I had gone through it again for the ninth time I was sitting and sobbing because it reminded me of you.  It reminded me of you and me.  Now, I wish that you were here with me, listening too.  This is the part that caught my attention.

“Never opened myself this way
Life is ours, we live it our way
All these words I don’t just say
And nothing else matters

Trust I seek and I find in you
Every day for us something new
Open mind for a different view
And nothing else matters

Never cared for what they say
Never cared for games they play
Never cared for what they do
Never cared for what they know
And I know

So close no matter how far
Couldn’t be much more from the heart
Forever trusting who we are
No nothing else matters”
